1. Prepare Your Yard

Follow your sod company's recommended soil preparation. Make sure to test your soil at least one month before installation so you have time to amend the soil pH, potassium, and phosphorus level if necessary.

Few homeowners would question the benefits of a lush lawn. However, many homeowners don't want to wait a year or two for a well-established seed lawn. The answer to that dilemma is to lay sod. If you've settled on that solution, avoid the following mistakes for a beautiful instant lawn.

Don’t Schedule the Delivery Too Far in Advance

Sod installation is a multi-step process. The first step is to measure your lawn to determine how much sod you need. As soon as you have that calculation, you can order your sod. You can set your delivery time when it's most convenient for you. That timeframe, though, needs to include the time you have set aside for laying the sod.

Whether the sod arrives in rolls or folds, it's alive. The sod consists of a thin layer of soil with the live turfgrass embedded in it. The turfgrass can't live indefinitely in rolls or folds with that thin layer of soil. It will start to overheat and decompose. Therefore, you can't store your sod for several days until you have time to lay it. Ideally, you should lay it the same day or the next day after delivery.

Don’t Fail to Prepare the Yard

Similarly, you should prepare the yard for sod installation before the delivery. That way, you can install it as soon as the palette of sod arrives. However, don't try to install sod over a yard you haven't prepared just to keep the sod rolls from decomposing. Your sod won't thrive if you haven't prepared the yard for the installation.

That preparation includes the removal of all old grass or plants. The turfgrass roots can't gain a foothold in the soil if they have to grow past existing plant life. You also need to gently loosen the soil you've exposed and rake it. Lightly water the soil enough so that it's not powdery but not so much that it's muddy — the water should penetrate about  1 ½ inch .

Don't forget about the edges of your yard. You need to lower the grade of the soil near the curbs and sidewalks so the grass doesn't sit too high in those areas. If the grass is too high, it won't get enough water and you're more likely to scalp it when you mow. Use a flat shovel to lower the grade where the sod will meet hardscaping.

Don’t Leave the Soil Unfertilized

Part of your soil preparation for laying sod needs to be a soil test. This test will tell you if your soil's pH is too far off to grow grass. Plants generally prefer soil that's relatively neutral in pH, which means the pH level should come in between six and seven. Certain grass varieties prefer soil at a specific pH, so talk to your turf farm about the grass in your sod.

You can buy pH kits at your home and garden center. You'll need to treat your soil based on the results of this test. At a minimum, you should apply a starter fertilizer. You may also need to apply lime based on the pH test results. The addition of finished compost before you lay the sod is also a good idea to promote the sod’s health.

1. Dog Urine

Most people have and enjoy pets. Dogs become our family, but they can also be hard on lawns. Dog urine damage usually looks like patches of dried out grass and may have dark green edges.

To remedy this, you will first need to keep the dog off the affected area. This can be done if you watch the dog and guide it to a better place to go, or you can fence the area off. Vary the location of where the dog relieves itself so that it is not always in the same place.

Water the dried grass thoroughly and often. Even though the grass may be dead, the grass that surrounds it tends to take over and fill in the dead patches.

If these steps do not fix your issue, then you may want to sprinkle some new grass seedlings onto the area or have new sod planted.

2. Mushrooms

Once you roll the new sod out onto the dirt, use a roller or other tool to ensure firm contact with the soil and the new sod.

After this, water is one of the most important steps to deter dry-out. Give the new sod plenty of water and wet through the soil underneath. Water the sod twice daily for about 20 minutes (more in hotter climates or times of the year). If you use a sprinkler and it does not reach the entirety of the sod, hand water the missed sections or be mindful to move the sprinkler around.

After two to three weeks, the new sod should begin to grow roots. You can check for root growth if you gently lift a side or corner of the sod. If the sod comes up very easily with no resistance, then it has most likely not begun to establish and the sod still has the potential to dry out.

Sometimes there's no choice but to lay sod in the winter while lawns lie dormant. Dormancy occurs in the winter cold when your lawn's grass turns brown and there's no need to mow.

Just as humans need sleep to rest and repair their bodies, winter lawns must conserve energy, water and nutrients during the long sleep of winter until it wakes to the spring thaw. The same holds true with sod.

If you lay dormant sod during the winter, be proactive to the challenges that could keep your it from establishing itself in your yard. This includes readying your soil by tilling in plenty of fertilizer, removing debris, and watering but not soaking it.

If you choose to keep your sod in the shed until spring, you will have to baby it a bit to make sure that it doesn't dry out and that the roots don't wither and die.

Preparing Lawn Soil

How to Prepare an Existing Grass Lawn for Sod Installation

When your current lawn is patchy and struggling to grow, investing in a new layer of sod is a great way to quickly improve your outdoor space. Unfortunately, you can't simply roll sod out over an existing turf lawn and expect great results.

To get the fastest and best establishment with as little lost sod as possible, you need to remove the existing grass and weeds first. Find out why and how to proceed after lawn removal to get the best results from a new installation of sod.

Remove the Grass

If you have practically no grass growth or root development, you may be able to lay sod directly over the surface. However, even the lightest amount of existing growth is best removed entirely, along with the root systems so the new sod gets the most contact with the bare soil.

Trying to lay sod over existing grass leads to drying and dead roots as the new layer struggles to reach the soil below. Since most struggling lawns need soil improvement before you add sod, you'll end up digging up and removing most of the remaining grass anyway and might as well clear away all of it for a fresh start.

Hoes, rakes, and forked tools all make fast work of removing small patches of lawn, but you'll want to rent a powered turf removal machine for large areas. You can compost the grass if you have a pile or bag it for removal on your usual yard waste pickup day.

Improve the Soil

When you're interested in adding sod to repair damaged parts of a lawn or to fill in a spot that won't germinate from seed, you likely need some soil improvements before laying new sod. Invest in a soil test, which is often free or inexpensive from your local extension office, to determine what fertilizers and how much organic material to add.

Organic materials like aged compost, fine wood chips, leaf mold, and similar woody additives all improve the texture of the soil. Mix those additions down to a depth of at least 6 inches and preferably closer to 10 inches. Even if you plan to add a few inches of pure screened topsoil to help the sod root and grow, you need healthy soil down to nearly a foot for a healthy lawn in the long run.

Level the Surface

Sod is particularly sensitive to any dips, hills, bumps, and other unevenness of your terrain. These features interfere with the sod's exposure to the soil, leading to drying or visible edges between pieces. After improving the soil and digging out any persistent root weeds or grass clods, you should level the lawn area as much as possible.

A little extra grading during the soil preparation process also prevents ponding that can drown your sod in low-lying areas. Add a few extra inches of topsoil and wood chips to raise up dips and bottom areas, in addition to cutting ditches to drain water that might gather or stand.

Treat for Weeds

Weeds can penetrate through new layers of sod and quickly ruin the look and growth of your brand-new lawn. Turning up the soil and adding in new materials often results in flushes of weed growth as buried seeds are exposed to the surface again. Spray a pre-emergent herbicide rated as safe for sod use on the bare soil to prevent weeds from getting a head start.

Bermuda Grass

One of the most common sod varieties is Bermuda grass. It features small blades of deeply green grass that grow fast. Bermuda grass needs full sun to grow lushly, so this sod isn't ideal for shady areas. That said, it features superior drought resistance, so Bermuda grass is an ideal sod for hot spots. What's more, it tolerates heavy foot traffic very well.

Kentucky Bluegrass

Another sod that tolerates full sun is that sewn with Kentucky bluegrass, though it can also tolerate some shade. So, if you want a lush lawn quickly, sod sewn with ryegrass might be a good option. It tolerates foot traffic well and doesn't mind some dry weather, which just sends it into a brief dormant state. Ryegrass is especially popular because of its fine texture and rich color.

St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine sod grass features broad grass blades in a blue-green color. It grows moderately fast and tolerates drought well. Its dense formation allows this sod to tolerate moderate foot traffic. What's more, St. Augustine grows well in the shade, making this sod ideal if you have a lot of trees. If you choose this sod, though, be aware that chemical weed killers can harm your grass.

Centipedegrass

Centipedegrass originated in China and Southeast Asia, so it's specially adapted to hot, humid climates. Indeed, this warm-season grass grows well in full sun and can tolerate even high temperatures. However, it is sensitive to cool temperatures and drought. The coarse-textured grass requires little mowing and resists enough foot traffic to make it ideal for regular lawn usage.

Carpetgrass

Carpetgrass is another variety that originated in tropical climates, though in this case the southern United States. This warm season grass features two-edged blades with rounded tops. An advantage of this sod is it requires little maintenance, though mowing keeps the seedstalks from growing through. Choose this sod variety if you have warm, wet growing conditions.

Bentgrass

Bentgrass is on the opposite end of the spectrum. A cool-season grass, it originated in the cooler parts of Asia and Europe, so it grows well in the Pacific Northwest and New England. Bentgrass produces a bluish-green carpet with a dense mat, making it tolerant of foot traffic. The sod establishes quickly and grows well. Bentgrass does require a lot of water, but it tolerates shade.

Tall Fescue

Sod sewn with tall fescue is a mid-range option. Though technically a cool-season grass, it tolerates both hot and cool weather. Tall fescue requires only moderate watering and tolerates drought pretty well. Like bentgrass, tall fescue sod establishes and grows quickly. Though it doesn't tolerate heavy foot traffic, it's a good option for lawns that see moderate usage.
